Well... I can complete these quizzes merely because TODAY IS MY FREE DAY (HALLELUJAH!) and NO JUGGLING of the 1000µl micropipette, container with loading tips, lab papers, journals, gloves, the ever-so-fragile quartz tube and Eppendorf tray ALONE! WOW!!!

... I'm hyperventilating uncontrollably. Sigh, it must've been one of the ramifications of persistent insomnia...

1. Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, and find line 4.
'[32] Antonacci, C.; Charles, J. B.; Sheardy, R. D. Biochemistry 2007, 46, 4654-4660.' WTF I CAN'T BELIEVE I ACTUALLY TYPED OUT A STRING OF APA-ISH NONSENSE. Well, technically, it's not a book but a compilation of my journals.

I don't- Half to charity and half for my parents

Biology Olympiad 2008
Date / Time : Thursday, November 6, 2008 / 7:21 PM
THE SINGAPORE BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD 2008 (first round) IS FINALLY OVER.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their well wishes and blessings, especially my PW mates!

Anyway, I officially dig penguins, ethylene, C3, C4 and CAM plants.

Genetics was a FAT piece of cake. Yup, truly astonishing.

Microfilaments + general knowledge on evolution (SK: JURASSIC PARK!), ethology(?!?!?!?!?!) + BLOODY TAXONOMY AND SYSTEMATICS = GG CMI.

Well, back to the story.

It was my
  • 1st time in NIE (ZOMGZXZX I LUV HIGH CEILINGS)
  • 1st time getting lost in NIE (ZOMGZXZX OUR NEVER ENDING TYCO JOURNEY HAHAHA)
  • 1st time in an Olympiad
  • 1st time 'act mug' with RJ smartasses
    (RJ guy: *irate* So, is it 3 Na+ in, 2 K+ out, or 3 Na+ out, 2 K+ in, or 3 K+ in, 2 Na+ out, or 3 K+ out, 2 Na+ in?! DAMN IT IT'S THE BASICS LEH!!!
    Me: *giggles*)
  • 1st time ogling at funky school badges *salivates at the sight of classy NUS High School of Mathematics and Science badges*
  • 1st time witnessing the SAJC spirit (WHOOO!)
  • 1st time witnessing the MJC spirit (A MOMENT OF SILENCE... ... ... Frenetic passes of that vile envelope in worried hands... ...)
  • 1st time losing faith in Mr Choo (it was actually, 200 questions in only 3 hours!)
  • 1st time in an undersized, enclosed space (waiting room) with some of the top 200 Biology students in Singapore (SK and I stoned... And stoned... And STONED!)

Great experience, I'll say!

PS: Maria 'i partner you'! :)

Stupud Public Bye
Date / Time : Sunday, November 2, 2008 / 4:30 PM
Hey kids.
I learnt 3 new words today.

They are:

'STUPUD', which is apparently the past tense of 'stupid',
'PUBLIC'; freeloaders PWN(!), and, lastly,
'BYE'.

You'll have to laugh after 'BYE'.

C3, C4, CAM, Chi-2
Date / Time : Saturday, November 1, 2008 / 10:43 PM
C3
CO2: 3C
Stomata: Day
Enzyme: RUBISCO (for photosynthesis and uptake of CO2)
Photosynthesis: Throughout the leaf
Adaptive value: More efficient than C4 and CAM plants under cool and moist conditions and under normal light (fewer enzymes and no specialised machinery)

C4
CO2: 4C
Stomata: Day
Enzyme: PEP Carboxylase (allows rapid uptake of CO2 and 'delivers' it directly to RUBISCO)
Photosynthesis: Inner cells (Kranz Anatomy)
Adaptive value: Photosynthesizes faster than C3 plants under high light intensity and high temperatures (CO2 delivered directly to RUBISCO, not allowing it to grab oxygen and undergo photorespiration); better water efficiency (PEP Carboxylase brings in CO2 faster and so does not need to keep stomata open as much thus less water lost by transpiration)

CAM
CO2: Stored in the form of an acid (before use in photosynthesis)
Stomata: Night (acid broken down in the day and CO2 is released to RUBISCO for photosynthesis)
Adaptive value: Better water efficiency than C3 plants under arid conditions (stomata open at night when transpiration rates are lower)
Killer.
I can only comprehend half of it.

The other half flew to Hardy and Weinberg and they all lived happily never after.
